Overview

Bronchitis is inflammation of the airways that carry air to the lungs, often causing a cough. This is general educational information, not medical advice.

Symptoms

  • persistent cough, sometimes bringing up mucus
  • mild chest discomfort
  • tiredness
  • mild fever in acute cases

Causes

  • viral respiratory infections (acute bronchitis)
  • long-term irritant exposure such as tobacco smoke (chronic bronchitis)

Risk factors

  • tobacco smoke or air-pollution exposure
  • recent respiratory infection

Prevention

  • avoiding tobacco smoke and irritants
  • hand hygiene and recommended vaccinations

Evaluation & tests

Educational note: clinicians usually assess bronchitis from symptoms and examination; tests are added when another condition is suspected. This library does not diagnose.

Treatment education

Educational overview: acute bronchitis is often self-limiting and care focuses on rest, fluids, and symptom relief guided by a clinician. This library does not prescribe.

Self-care

General education: rest, staying hydrated, and avoiding irritants can support recovery; seek review if symptoms persist.

When to seek care

Seek professional care if a cough lasts more than three weeks, breathing becomes difficult, or a high fever develops.
